Egypt Sherrod has overcome enormous life challenges, and alongside Mike Jackson, she’s not only survived, but thrived. My Nicki Swift feature highlights these HGTV stars and the strength of their marriage.

HGTV’s Married to Real Estate may have some staged moments, but the genuine love between Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson is undeniable. Their deep connection shines through on screen and is reflected in their strong, beautiful family. Yet, despite their success, life hasn’t always been smooth for the couple. Over their two decades together, they’ve faced marital challenges, health struggles, and heartbreaking family losses — overcoming each hurdle both as partners and as individuals.

Egypt Sherrod initially rejected Mike Jackson over past relationship traumas

Early in her relationship with Mike Jackson, Egypt Sherrod tried to push him away—not from lack of interest, but from fear of being hurt like she had been in the past. She later realized her actions were shaped by old relationship wounds.

Mike’s intercession helped Egypt recognize her fears. She’s quoted as saying, “He called me out on my mess and told me, ‘You are taking it out on me — everything from every other guy that did you wrong,”  on “Black Love” in 2019 (via XoNecole).

Journalist Manuella Libardi writes, “As harmful as it might be, Sherrod’s experience is common. “If we’ve endured multiple negative experiences, it’s only natural to become overly cautious,” Susan Winter, NYC Relationship Expert and creator of the “Love À La Carte Method,” exclusively told Nicki Swift. “We’ll start to hunt for red flags, betrayal, and inauthentic behavior in our current partner.”

When toxic relationships end, it’s important to address the trauma to make room for new, genuine love. “We need to review our participation (as well as our exes) and manage the emotional baggage left behind,” Winter told us. That’s what Sherrod did. After Jackson alerted her to the problem, she started going to therapy. “We have to get our minds right,” she said.

Relationships come not only with joy, but with challenges. And often, the biggest challenges lie within ourselves: our own resistance, fears, and past baggage. But when we do the inner work to overcome these fears, we’re are often rewarded with one of life’s greatest gifts — a loving partnership.
