New study reveals states with the unhappiest couples — is yours one of them? | New York Post Interview
A new study reveals which states have the unhappiest couples. In my interview with the New York Post, I explain the key factors driving these results.
This appears to be where romance meets its breaking point.
Researchers identified the states where relationships are struggling most by analyzing per-capita Google searches for terms like “couples therapy,” “divorce lawyer,” “how to save your marriage,” and other red-flag phrases.
Colorado topped the list, suggesting its relationships are as unsteady as its terrain. The state logged roughly 12,000 searches a month—about 204 per 100,000 residents—according to data from the interactive research platform Spin the Wheel Generator.
New Jersey followed closely behind. Despite its nickname, love isn’t flourishing in the Garden State, which ranked second with 17,756 relationship-distress searches per month, or 191 per 100,000 residents.
Journalist Georgia Worrell writes, “New York and New Jersey are among the top three states with the unhappiest couples, a depressing new study found. New York was a close third, with 188 searches per 100,000 residents, or 36,883 red-flag searches per month, the study found.”
As to why, she shares my commentary.
“New York and New Jersey are fast-paced, high-pressure environments that attract ambitious, career-driven individuals. The relentless pace of metropolitan life, coupled with ongoing struggles for work-life balance, often adds significant strain to romantic relationships,” Big Apple relationship expert Susan Winter told The Post about the findings.
In Winter’s experience, “urban couples often carry heightened expectations when it comes to intimacy, communication and fulfillment,” she said.
Continuing, I stated, “When those lofty expectations collide with the realities of daily stress, long work hours, and the natural imperfections of human connection, many couples find themselves at an impasse. That’s when they turn to outside guidance – seeking therapists who can help them bridge the gap between what they hoped for and what they’re actually experiencing.”
Worrell writes, “However, ‘divorce lawyer near me’ was the most commonly Googled relationship phrase in the Garden State and five others, the researchers found.”
“Couples therapy” was the most frequently searched in New York and 38 other states — which suggests that most Americans “are conscious of the fact that issues exist and are seeking a remedy,” said Winter.
Worrell continued, “Utah and Massachusetts were fourth and fifth for most unhappy couples.
On the flip side, South Dakota boasts the nation’s most content couples – with just 689 monthly searches for love help, or 75 per 100,000 residents.”
